Skaleta is one of the small villages that are in a row at the beach on the east side of Rethimnon (also Stavromenos, Adelianos Kampos, Platanes).
It is a place that is mostly designed to please the tourists and is a suburb of Rethimnon. Inside the village there are a number of hotels, restaurants, bars and sandy beaches.
If you want to go sight seeing on the island of Crete it would be best to rent a car. A bus ride to either Rethymno, Chania or Heraklion from Skaleta is also possible. The bus ride to Rethymno is cheap, takes about 25 minutes and during the tourist season it goes every half an hour. The town of Rethimno is about 12 kilometers away. At some of the hotels you can buy bus tickets at the reception.
In the beach of Scaleta you can find numerous small boats that can take you on an excursion along the coast.
